There’s a certain comfort to be had from the belief that technology will solve all our problems in the future. Our fears about healthcare, the environment, energy, food supply and wealth management, all appear less troublesome when we put our faith in the infinite possibilities that the march of progress seems to promise.

Technology has shown itself to be a more reliable predictor of both financial and bodily health; a faster method to calculate, refine and process; a cheaper means to access and enjoy goods and services; a more robust form of monitoring and control; and now, with the advent of Chat GPT, a more standardised, efficient, and intelligent way to research, collate, and articulate facts and information.

For all that, there are certain tasks – such as communication, collaboration, negotiation, creative conceptualisation, and leadership thinking – where humans are more competent that machines because what is demanded is deeply personal, emotional, creative, and genuine. These activities define us as individuals, make us unique, and eventually make us successful. And while they have many dimensions, there is one thing they all have in common: language.

This is why language proficiency and fluency are so important for professional development. Language helps us to connect, to empathise, to break down barriers, to convince, to argue, to reason, to delight, and to tell the world who we really are. In a world dominated by ideas and entrepreneurship, public conversations and opinions, language is a prerequisite for success. With it, we are armed to succeed; without it, we are doomed to struggle.

English is the language of business and higher learning – of the global workplace. Neither the student nor the professional can afford to forgo the need for a certain level of English language expertise. And what better way to learn a language than at one’s own pace, and in a medium of one’s own choice?

This is why we have chosen to build a user-controlled, voice-assisted mobile app – so that one can engage with the English language in a non-academic environment at a time of one’s choosing, without peer pressure or performance anxiety. In the end, we want the English language to be a lifelong companion – not an insurmountable challenge – helping the individual to find an authentic voice and to articulate a real vision in order to succeed.
