Nothing makes writing more powerful than brevity, clarity and candour

The English writer Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell – author of 1984 and Animal Farm – wrote an essay titled “Politics and the English Language” in 1946, in which he offered some insights into what makes for good communication. He distilled these into six golden rules that are as valid today, as they were when he first wrote them:

  1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
  2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.
  3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
  4. Never use the passive where you can use the active.
  5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
  6. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

No matter your field of activity, three things still get you the best results:

  • An economy of words to express ideas and opinions
  • A clarity of thought that shows intelligence and commitment
  • A credibility of purpose to persuade others

And nowhere is this more evident than in the field of writing. Writing is the best measure of a person’s thoughts, beliefs and intentions. This is why the ALSOWISE® Masters Programme has created special modules on writing correctly, clearly and compellingly.

The importance of being precise, coherent and convincing – particularly in English, the global language of business and academics – is extremely important today. In an increasingly competitive world, dominated by automation and artificial intelligence, traditional skills and credentials may become over-commodified or irrelevant. In such a scenario, the ability to articulate individual creative competencies will, most likely, become the only pertinent discriminants of ability, achievement and success.

How can the ALSOWISE® Masters Programme help you?

The ALSOWISE® Masters Programme is designed to enhance proficiency in the English language for graduate students and young working professionals. Demanding only 80 minutes per weekly module, it focuses on:

  1. Revisiting the foundations of grammar and vocabulary which were last experienced in school.
  2. Building critical reading skills which are necessary for building knowledge and for instilling a self-learning orientation.
  3. Developing both verbal and written business communication skills for the workplace.

Using technology to recreate a one-to-one classroom environment, in which users are made to listen, read, engage, and practice, on a mobile device of their choice goes a long way in building familiarity with, and expertise in, the English language.

It is never too late to learn and hone this valuable skill. So, if you’re looking to improve your English communication skills with a view to standing out in a crowded field, and getting ahead in your career:
