ChatGPT may help you to cobble together a standard document, essay or note, BUT … you still need to be SKILLED READER

The greater the reliance on large language models (LLMs) that harness the power of artificial intelligence, the greater the onus placed on the user to review, edit, and amend the material before finalisation and submission.

There are at least three types of errors that the user will need to be mindful of:

  1. Probabilistic error – Even though ChatGPT and other LLM programmes are rules-based, they often include data points if the likelihood of inclusion serves to enhance the output. This is easily proven. Ask ChatGPT to write your resume and you will quickly discover that while it has done an extraordinary job in pulling together your biodata by scouring the public domain, there will be at least one or two factoids that have been included because your profile is likely to include – based on other profiles that are similar – certain experiences, qualifications, or achievements.
  2. Source error – Since LLMs try to synthesise large numbers of data points in order to provide the most comprehensive results, the user has no control over the origin, provenance, or reliability of the sources from which such programmes draw their material. The internet and social media domains, after all, are full of misinformation, fake news, and false inferences.
  3. Interpretation error – Even if our query is articulate and specific, the programme could still misinterpret our intention and return a document that is at cross-purposes with the message we intend to convey. This can be a serious problem when dealing with key constituencies whose support may depend on the tone and direction of the message.

Correcting your own resume is easy; but this can be severely challenging when the length, novelty and complexity of the output material expands. Only a skilled reader will be able to navigate these obstacles efficiently. After all, reading:

  • Promotes knowledge retention
  • Informs individual opinion
  • Encourages doubt and scepticism
  • Compels critical analysis
  • Enables the habit of cross-referencing

If reading is not a core skill, ChatGPT could be a curse, not a blessing. Without this skill, the use of LLMs could become painful, time-consuming, and even counterproductive.
