In the end it is language that makes us who we are …

The English language, like other human languages, is akin to mathematics. The accompanying graphic  illustrates the fact that for both of these disciplines there are methods to learn, conventions to which one must adhere, nuances to master, and a fluent familiarity that needs to be developed over time into a life-skill. Both skills support our endeavour to make sense of the world. They work on rules and exceptions, and exhibit an aesthetic power that fires the mind: a pithy paragraph can be as convincing and pleasing as an elegant mathematical proof.

There are, however, several key differences between the two.

  1. First, language is less about pattern recognition, and more about fluency and authenticity. Any pattern may be imitated by human or artificial intelligence. This is why many people may be equally proficient at mathematics, but only a few are equally adept with a language. Moreover, only an individual can be unique and creative. These attributes are always expressed and conveyed through language, not through facts and figures.
  2. Second, language is not something that may be mastered, and then forgotten after the examination. The graphic clearly shows how our education system over-emphasizes mathematical skills in the years leading up to early adulthood, an emphasis that is not usually consistent with the application thereafter. Language skills on the other hand, continue to grow and remain relevant through the course of one’s life. Over time, these skills acquire critical and strategic and critical dimensions without which career success becomes increasingly more difficult.
  3. Lastly, language usually operates in a social setting. It is the basis of all communication, and defines our desires, fears, aspirations and beliefs. Our ability to communicate makes us who we are, and can be used to build trust, collaboration, influence and consensus. Communication is too important for any career-conscious individual to ignore. It must be practised, refined, perfected and enjoyed. Good communication skills become, as shown in the graphic, our most valuable aid in expressing ideas and opinions, and a necessity for navigating both social and professional milieus.

This is why no level of expertise or brilliance can be divorced from the ability to use language to articulate and persuade others of your abilities. In the end, it is our ability with language – and for many involved in business, service and academics, this language is English – that differentiates our ability, and establishes our leadership credentials.

It’s never too late to become proficient and confident in the English language.
