Tribute to Charles Munger
Charles T. (Charlie) Munger, who was Warren Buffett’s partner in Berkshire Hathaway for decades, and who helped to make it the investing powerhouse that it became, passed away on November 28, a few weeks shy of his one-hundredth birthday.
An incredibly astute person, two quotes ascribed to him are of especial significance today:
“Spend each day trying to be a little wiser than you were when you woke up.”
“In my whole life, I have known no wise people (over a broad subject matter area) who didn’t read all the time — none, zero… My children laugh at me. They think I’m a book with a couple of legs sticking out.”
Today, the “digital revolution” and the sheer ubiquity of multi-media devices with screens of varying sizes, have had a pernicious impact on reading comprehension and attention spans.
The harsh reality is – be it education, research, business strategy or policy formulation – higher order reading skills are mission critical to success.
Nor is reading an inherent skill or something that one happens upon by accident. It requires assiduous cultivation and diligent effort over the years. Thus, when we allow digital screens to reduce our attention span to less than 15 seconds (as is the case in some developed countries today) and actively eschew the reading habit, we are blighting ourselves with a very bleak future indeed.
This is why it is important for people:

- To spend an appropriate amount of time and effort to practice the reading habit as frequently as possible
- To hone this into a skill that assists knowledge retention, idea comprehension and decision-making analysis
