The written word is gaining traction in the corporate world
Did you know that Jeff Bezos effectively banned PowerPoint at Amazon some years ago? This idea had its genesis in an experiment with the senior management team, way back in June 2004! Bezos’s rationale was that PowerPoint presentations give people the leeway to gloss over ideas and allow them to ignore or overlook the inter-connectedness of those ideas. In other words, Bezos did not think that PowerPoint was a good way to share ideas and arrive at decisions. The alternative: a well-structured, carefully written, and narrative driven (6-page) memo! He pointed out that it is much more difficult to write a memo than it is to notate bullet points on a PowerPoint slide and this rigour forces better thinking.
The idea proved so effective and successful that PowerPoint presentations were banned across the firm in 2018. Today, memos are circulated before every meeting and people study them carefully before they attend. Just one of the many things that Amazon did differently enroute to establishing itself as a corporate behemoth which straddles the globe.Which begs the question, how comfortable do you imagine many senior executives in India would be with having to pen a 6-page memo? And how much longer will they be able to get by, underestimating the power of effective communication?
While Amazon may be a trend setter, it is only a question of time before more and more organisations see the merit in its thought process. After all, there is no substitute for language skills and the ability to communicate effectively. And the practice of writing allows one to:
- Be self-critical
- Build clarity
- Refine understanding
